Applying for Italian Citizenship through marriage can be challenging given the time sensitivity of the required supporting documents, whose processing times is solely at the discretion of the issuing authorities and can put the applicant in a dramatic time-bind.

In terms of eligibility, the applicant can apply if:

-A male or female (foreign or stateless) spouse of an Italian born citizen has been married for two years if residing in Italy, or after three years from the date of marriage if he/she resides abroad;

-A male or female (foreign or stateless) spouse of an Italian citizen jure sanguinis has been married for three years since the date the Italian spouse has received his citizenship.

In terms of required documents, the applicant should produce:

– Certificate of citizenship of the Italian spouse and current AIRE registration.

– Marriage certificate issued by the Italian Comune where it was transcribed or celebrated.
– Applicant’s foreign birth certificate, in long form, apostilled and translated.
– Applicant’s criminal records issued by both the FBI and the States where the applicant has lived since the age of 14; original certificates must be apostilled and translated. These certificates only bear a validity of 6 months since the issue date.

– Applicant’s Italian Language Exam Score/Certificate proving he/she masters at least a B1 level.
– Applicant’s valid passport copy and driver’s license copy.
– Proof of bank transfer payment for the processing fee to the Ministry of Interior Account.

Women who married an Italian citizen before April 27, 1983 are eligible for automatic citizenship through their Italian husband by submitting a comparatively simpler application through their local Consulate, subject to the payment of the same application fee levied for jure sanguinis applications.
